MTN Bike and Walk Challenge

MTN Business Kenya is set to host The MTN Bike & Walk Challenge, which is a fund-raising event to support Amusha Youth Group’s project in Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums which will empower them with sustainable income. Read on for the project details.

Date: 1st June 2019

Time: 7a.m. to 12.30p.m.

Venue: Ngong’ Road Forest Sanctuary

Prizes: Cash Prizes for winners, medals for all participants.

Cycling Categories:

  1. Elite Category- 30 Km trail
  2. Recreational Category- 15Km trail
  3. Kids Category- 5Km trail
  4. Kids Category- 5Km trail

Charges: Ksh. 2,000 per person with your own bicycle; additional Ksh. 1,000 for bicycle and helmet hire.

The MTN Bike and Walk Challenge is the flag-off event of MTN’s CSR campaign dubbed ’21 Days of Y’ello Care’. It runs for three weeks starting from 1st June to 21st June every year.  We are looking to raise 50,000 USD to support over 300 youth in Mukuru kwa Njenga slums. Therefore, all registration fees of the MTN Bike and Walk Challenge will go towards supporting Amusha Youth Group’s project in Mukuru Kwa Njenga slums.

By becoming our sponsors, in addition to the above, you will be able to support in transforming over 300 youth through sustainable income projects which include:

  1. 3 phase power connection to their plastic waste recycling plant.
  2. 3-D Printer to enhance recycling production.
  3. ICT Knowledge centre with computers and internet.
  4. Social Hall renovations.
  5. Bio-digester repairs to improve sanitation and hygiene as well as bio-gas production as a source of fuel.
  6. Training on soft skills – design, Taxation, Digital marketing and much more.

Y’ello Care Day Mental Health Talk – 20th June 2019

Additionally, a Mental Health Talk will be held on 20th June 2019 with the aim of creating awareness and sharing preventive measures of Mental Illnesses amongst the youths. This will take place at Catholic University (CUEA), and targets between 500 to 800 youths.

Background of previous 21 Days of Y’ello Care Campaigns

MTN Business Kenya has been part of the campaign where lives of a number of beneficiaries from the community have been uplifted and transformed.  An extensive need analysis and a rigorous selection process is carried out to ensure that the right beneficiaries are chosen.

2018, the beneficiaries included over 300 youth in Mukuru Slums Development Project, a vocational training centre located in Mukuru kwa Ruben.

  1. Sanitation was improved by way of installing a bio-digester and tapping bio-gas for consumption during catering classes.
  2. Revamped computer lab.
  3. Internet provision.
  4. Hall renovations.
  5. Renovation of leaking roofs and much more.
  6.  A successful Family Fun Day with autistic children and their families was held at University of Nairobi grounds during the campaign.
  7. A culmination of the campaign was the Career Day held at Catholic University of Eastern Africa with over 400 youth from different institutions joined by other students in Kisumu and Mombasa regions who followed the event via Video Conferencing. 

2017, we supported two rehabilitation centres.

  • Dagoretti and Kabete rehabs where a number of projects were carried out – built a staff room for teachers, computer lab revamping, e-curriculum installation, internet provision and much more.

Other beneficiaries include, Maralal Primary school, Upper Hill School, Nairobi School, Langata Women’s Prison among others.
